Osteoporosis: The Silent Bone Thinner
Osteoporosis: The Silent Bone Thinner
Osteoporosis is a bone disease where bones become weak, brittle, and more likely to break. It often develops silently, without symptoms, until a fracture occurs.
What Happens in Osteoporosis?
- Bones lose density and strength
- Increased risk of fractures, especially in the hip, spine, and wrist
- Fractures can occur even with minor falls or everyday activities
Who is at Risk?
- Women after menopause (due to low estrogen)
- Men over age 65
- People with family history, low body weight, or sedentary lifestyle
- Long-term use of steroids
- Smoking and excessive alcohol intake
Warning Signs
Often no symptoms until a fracture occurs.
But some possible clues:
- Loss of height over time
- Stooped posture (dowager’s hump)
- Back pain from vertebral fractures
Prevention & Management
- Calcium & Vitamin D rich diet
- Regular weight-bearing exercise (walking, jogging, resistance training)
- Avoid smoking & limit alcohol
- Bone density scan (DEXA scan) for early detection
- Medications (as prescribed) can slow bone loss and strengthen bones
Remember: Osteoporosis may be silent, but fractures can be life-changing. Early screening and lifestyle changes are the best protection.
